Hank Green of SciShow Explains Solar Energy, How it Works & How It Fits Into Our Future
“A good desert collects more solar energy in 6 hours than the entire world uses in a year.
The surface area of my body is about 1.5 meters squared. If I laid out in the sun all day long, every day for a year, I would collect about 1500 watts of solar energy.”
Can you guess what was humankind’s first source of power?
Why do we seem to have forgotten and are now hesitant to take advantage of solar energy? Maybe because the thought photo-voltaic cells or solar panels intimidate us. They seem to be so high-tech to us. In fact, they have been discovered in 1839 by a 19-year-old kid! And they’re not that complicated as you can see from this video.
One of the reasons that solar power isn’t used by many people is the cost, but a solution to this problem is to build solar power plants than can create energy in two ways.
- A giant tower with mirrors that are always focusing on the sun.
- Giant mirrored troughs with a pipe in the middle which gets hot enough to vaporize water and create electricity.
“Treat the earth well, it was not given to us by our parents.
It was loaned to us by our children.”
